Mansfield Moose - April 10th

There she is.

It is sunny today and around 50 degrees. I had to go again to see if I could get better photos. The unusually high level of snow this year may make this a once in a lifetime opportuity to see the moose up close with a margin of safety.

The moose had moved just a few yards.
Dolly stood in one place and watched me while she nibbled. "That's close enough," she thought. I agreed. Thank goodness I have a telephoto lens. It is essential for pikas because they are so small and quick. It is essential for moose because they are so big and wild.

Don't forget the warning.

"It's pathetic for a big moose like me to
be eating such tiny sticks. I wish the snow would melt and grasses grow.
"
"It's so good to see you again." Click to enlarge.
Molly was moving around more to find the tenderest greenery.
"Think I'll go over there."
"This tastes pretty good."
Molly the nibbler.
"This even smells good."
"Pretty soon all the snow will be in this stream."
The sun was shining and Dolly
was overcome by drowsiness.
"Sunshine is good." Click to enlarge
She plopped down and let her eyelids droop.
"Sometimes a lady just has to plop down." Click to enlarge.

An hour later, two rolls of film were shot.

"I'm not going anywhere for awhile."
Dolly's still sitting quietly in the trees. As I turned to ski home, Molly plopped down too.
